HINTS FOR GRAYSCALE -------------------------------------------- If you're not pressed for time at the moment you might not want to consult these hints unless you have already explored everywhere you can and have examined most objects you come in contact with. Talking to Alanna ( the woman at the center of the library ) and examining objects is an important part of the game since these two actions not only provide answers to the puzzles but also develop the plot. Also the game is only slightly linear so you may come across puzzles in a completely different order than I have them listed here. Searching for the answer to your particular problem will no doubt give you clues you didn't want but there's no way around that with a text hint file. Just try not to look at the answers as you scan for the question you want. With that said, on to the hints. HOW DO I OPEN THE LOCKED DOOR AT THE NORTH END OF THE ENTRY WAY? >Take a look around at the end of the hallway south of the staircase. >See the table? Examine it. >Open the drawer. >The key is inside. HOW DO I OPEN THE FRENCH DOOR SOUTH OF THE LIVING ROOM? >There are two possible answers to this. >Try asking Alanna about the french door. >If you can't think of a way to open the door nicely try a more direct approach. >Break the glass with something and then you'll be able to reach through and unlock the door from the other side. OK, I'M IN THE GLASS ROOM...CAN I GET OUTSIDE? >Yes. >It is a glass room after all, look around. >Just examine the walls. >Specifically the south wall. HOW DO I GET THE JAR OFF THE PILLAR? >Have you asked Alanna about the jar and the pillar? >The pillar is weight sensitive, you'll need something with the exact same weight. >You'll know it when you see it. WHAT DO I DO WITH THESE GEMS? >If you haven't been upstairs yet don't worry about it. >If you have been upstairs look at the questions regarding the things you found there and this question will be answered. HOW DO I GET UPSTAIRS? >If you haven't unlocked the door at the north end of the entry way don't worry about it yet. >If you have then examine the bookcase. >This one should be obvious...if all else fails take a book or two. >Neat huh? If the bookcase is open when it happens you get to watch, otherwise you just hear it. HOW DO I OPEN THE BOOKCASE? >If you haven't unlocked the door at the north end of the entry way don't worry about it yet. If you have.... >You don't need to. In fact the possibility isn't even mentioned in the game. >If you insist it is a nice shortcut. >Just try taking books off of it and see what happens. I ATE SOME BERRIES AND DIED!! >Well if you examined the willow tree there *was* a warning. >If you don't know what Atropa Belladonna is offhand ask Alanna about it. >There is a cure if you do eat them though. >Drink the water from the pool at the center of the garden. >You only get four turns to accomplish this so don't waste any time. I ATE SOME GRAPES AND DIED!!! >If you examined the grapes you would have noticed that the berries were mixed in with them. >There is a 75% chance of getting a grape and a 25% chance of getting a berry. >Since there are no hunger puzzles there is no reason to take the chance at all. >For a way to reverse the effects of eating a berry see the above question. THE MASK WON'T COME OFF!!! >Well for the first three turns the mask will come off so for this to be a problem you must have left the thing on after several obviously forboding messages. >Curiosity killed the cat I suppose. >You have ten turns from the time you put it on until the time you die. >The only way to get it off is to drink the water in the pool at the center of the garden. OK, I'M UPSTAIRS BUT HOW DO I GET PASSED THE DOOR WITH THE FACE ON IT? >Isn't it obvious? >If you haven't found the mask yet then don't worry about it. >But then once you do find it I suppose I've already given away the answer huh? >Oh well, it was an easy one anyway. >Just to be sure it's clear, put the mask on the face to open the door. OK, I'M IN THE MASTER BEDROOM, NOW WHAT? >Examine the table you see there. >Four small holes...what would fit in four small holes? >Four small gems maybe? WHAT GEMS? WHERE? I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! >Have you been in the garden on the east side of the house yet? >From the stairwell go south and then go east to get outside. >Examine the statues you find to get the gems. WHICH GEMS GO IN WHICH HOLES? >Well if you remember where you got them from this should be easy. >There is a statue at each of the cardinal points of the garden and a gem was in each one. >There is a hole at each of the cardinal points of the table and a gem goes in each one. >What? You don't remember which gems go where? >There are three ways of doing this. >One: Try every possible combination. ( Not fun ) >Two: Ask Alanna about each gem. ( The easiest way ) >Three: Try putting the gems back where you got them, they will only fit in their original statues. THE TABLE IS OPEN, NOW WHAT? >You looked in the secret compartment and found the black jar right? >Any idea what you might do with a black jar? >If you haven't been in the clearing yet don't worry about it. >If you have then you may have noticed the pillar is weight sensitive. >Presumably a jar's color does not effect it's weight greatly. >Replacing the clear jar with the black jar allows you to get the clear jar out of the clearing, or vice versa depending on which jar you want. OK, I SOLVED ALL YOUR PUZZLES BUT NOTHING HAPPENED AND I DON'T SEE WHAT ELSE THERE IS TO DO! >Remember that parchment paper you found next to the bay window? >Each line is important, read it as if it were instructions. >If you still don't know what to do go ask Alanna about the parchment and then about the pillar. >Have you tried opening the jar outside? >If you did and nothing happened you weren't in the right place. >Alanna says the pillar can "hear" try opening the jar in the clearing. I FLUSHED THE PARCHMENT DOWN THE TOILET, HOW DO I GET IT BACK? >What possesed you to do that? You didn't actually think it would get you anywhere did you? >You can't get it back. >Luckily you don't need it to beat the game, it would have helped though. >You'll just have to solve the puzzles with one less hint. I OPENED THE JAR IN THE CLEARING AND THE PILLAR TURNED BUT NOTHING ELSE OBVIOUS HAPPENED. >Make sure you only opened the jar once. >Opening the jar a second time will reverse the effects of what you've done. >If you opened the jar more than once just be sure it was an odd number of times. >Go to the center of the library and have a look around. >If nothing has changed then you must have opened the clear jar an even number of times, go back to the clearing and do it again then come back and look around. THE LEATHER CHAIR NEXT TO ALANNA HAS TURNED INTO A STAIRCASE! >Brilliant deduction, try going down. I WENT DOWN THE CHAIR/STAIRWAY BUT EVERYTHING IS DARK! >The candle holder wont help here, there is no candle in it. >Even if there were there is no way to light one anyway. >There is a switch, but it isn't in the same room. >Go back to the study and examine the bookcase again. >See any titles that might be helpfull? >Take Heart of Darkness. THE LIGHTS ARE ON IN THE DREAM ROOM BUT I CAN'T GET ANYWHERE, IS THERE A WAY TO FIX IT?? >Yes. >Read the parchment paper again. >There is another pillar here just like the one on the other side of the bay window. >Try putting things on the pillar. >Only the clear jar will work. I FILLED THE CLEAR JAR WITH WATER AND THEN PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE, HOW DO I GET THE ICE OUT? >Well why on earth did you do that to begin with? >Just put the jar in the oven, close the oven and turn it on. The ice will be melted when you open it again. WHAT CAN I DO IN THE ROOM FULL OF PAINTINGS? >Typing x painting will take you around the room one painting at a time. >There are nine paintings, the game will let you know when you've arrived at the last. >To go back and look at a particular painting type x artist replacing artist with the name of the painting's artist. >You can also ask Alanna about the artists, she knows something about each. WHAT CAN I DO WITH THE SUPER COMPUTER? >There is a gui (graphical user interface) toggle button. >It turns Alanna on and off. (She is just a hollogram after all) >If you turn her off you can get a better look at the chair she was in. >Examining the stone chair will make more sense if you've asked her for her name and about fire and ice. HOW DO I GET PASSED THE STEEL DOOR? >Did you read the note? >"Little snail on my bonsai tree" >Examine the bonsai. >Examine the snail. >Type "home" on keypad should work. I DROPPED SOMETHING INTO THE SWIRLING VORTEX, HOW DO I GET IT BACK? >You can't. >Really. It's gone forever. >Luckily you don't need it anymore. I'M IN THE GRAY ROOM, NOW WHAT? >If you've talked with Alanna a lot then this should be obvious. >If not then go examine the coffee table in the study. >Now go ask Alanna about it. >Keep asking her about the things she mentions until you've learned everything she knows about the subject. >If you are still unclear then go examine the curtains in the living room. >You can ask Alanna about them too if you want. >Still don't know what to do in the gray room? >Just enter the vortex. ( Or go down, both do the same. ) I WENT THROUGH THE VORTEX BUT I HAD THE MASK ON! >Bad move. >After getting this far in the game you must have known what the mask was. (Or at least should have) >There's no help for this really, you're dead...so close, and yet so far. >Next time don't wear the mask.
